The rain kept falling but it didn’t deter a sell out crowd from taking in the 2011 Riverport Duathlon on Sunday October 2nd.

And the post race meal was maybe the best chili and apple crisp … ever!

We’ve started to plan for the 2012 Riverport Duathlon, tentatively scheduled for Sunday October 7, 2012.  We hope you can join us.  (UPDATE: the 2012 Riverport Duathlon will take place on SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 30, 2012)

The 6th Annual Riverport Duathlon is taking place on Sunday October 2nd.

The overall format will be the same as previous years:

• 10am start
• two race distances
• chip timed
• great prizes
• post race meal

And some new things for 2011:

• Provincial Duathlon Championship race (10% more race points)
• Prize money
• new starting location — the site of our first duathlon — the Riverport Community Centre at 79 Lower Lahave Road, Riverport, NS
• the bike courses will be the same as previous years for both distances, however the runs are different — quiet, flat and fast
• the new site is tight for space so we are capping the race — Classic distance (4/28/4) : 80 individual/5 Teams and the Do-a-DU distance (1/14/1) : 20 individuals

The 10th Annual Bridgetown Triathlon took place on Sunday July 31, 2011 under near perfect conditions — sunny, light breeze and warm (24C).  Its a popular race for the BTC and this year we had participants in all the distances including:

• Youth/Try-a-Tri : Jennifer Aggett (3rd Female Overall an 1st in her Age Group), Liam Patterson (1st Overall), Diana Saunders (2nd Female Overall, 1st in her Age Group) and Ken Snook (1st in his Age Group).
• Sprint : Llew Chase,  Caitlin Cormier,  Kevin Johnson (2nd in his Age Group), Jennifer MacDougall and Tom Rogers.
• Olympic : Janelle Knickle (1st in her Age Group) and Steve Saunders (1st in his Age Group)
• Long Course : Tim Brooks and Tammy Slauenwhite (2nd in her age group)

Level I is in the morning and is suitable for anyone that is a race marshal.  Level II is in the afternoon and builds on what was learned in the morning session.  Level II is a requirement for any race organizers.

Schedule:

• 8:30 am – Start Level I clinic
• 9:45 am – refreshment break
• 10:00-12:00 – Level I clinic
• 12:00-1:00pm – Lunch
• 1:00 pm – Start Level II clinic
• 2:15 pm – refreshment break
• 2:30 pm – 4:00pm – Level II clinic

There is no need to reserve a spot, just make sure to show up ready to run (inside and out).  So start practicing your pacing skills and see you on the 21st!

What’s a prediction run?

For starters, this run has no watches, HRMs, GPS or any kind of music device.  On the day of the race the distance and route will be given out.  Based on this information you PREDICT your time which will be recorded then compared to your actual time.   The closest prediction to their time wins.  Speed is not relevant which means you have as good a chance as anyone to win!  All you need is to listen to your body and maybe a tiny bit of luck!

• Distance: 5-7Kms
• Cost: $5 plus a non perishable food item for the Food Bank

Prize will be given to the overall winner (closest to their time).

BTCer Cliff Worden-Rogers competes at the Foster Grant 2010 Ironman 70.3 Championships in Clearwater Florida on Saturday November 13th.  This will be his second time at the event.  It caps of a long triathlon race season that started in March with Rohto Ironman 70.3 California.

Is this your year to tackle a duathlon???  The Bridgewater Triathlon Club will be hosting the 5th Annual Riverport Duathlon on Sunday October 3rd and this introductory session will take you through the steps of a run – bike – run event with details of what’s required to successfully complete your first duathlon.  Appropriate for all fitness levels, ages 12 and up.

[Patrick Hirtle - SouthShoreNow] – Bridgewater Triathlon Club member Cliff Worden-Rogers turned in a remarkable performance in the Bridgetown Triathlon’s Half Ironman on August 1, finishing first overall.

But, as wonderful as the victory was, he will be the first to say that it wasn’t a race that went exactly as expected.
