The food was … exceptional … continuing the belief that triathlon really has a fourth discipline

The Point Series goes to the Female and Male that have the highest number of points in their best three races.  The recipients this year were Janelle Knickle and Liam Patterson.

The Warrior Award goes to the member that participates in the most number of races during the year — any type, anywhere.  The recipient this year was Steve Saunders.

The P-Series Award goes to any member that completes all three club events — a duathlon (run-bike-run), an aquathlon (swim-run-swim-run) and a triathlon (swim-bike-run).  Medal recipients included Caitlin Cormier, Diana Saunders (pictured above), Freda Cormier, Gail Mercer, Janelle Knickle, Karen Weagle, Ken Snook (pictured above), Kevin Johnson, Liam Patterson and Llew Chase.

And Tammy Slauenwhite was recognized for her outstanding efforts with the ‘My First Triathlon’ program this year.

The last club activity for 2011 is our Annual General Meeting on Saturday November 26, 2011 where we review 2011, look ahead to what’s coming in 2012 and elect a new executive.

The 6th Annual Riverport Duathlon is taking place on Sunday October 2nd.

The overall format will be the same as previous years:

• 10am start
• two race distances
• chip timed
• great prizes
• post race meal

And some new things for 2011:

• Provincial Duathlon Championship race (10% more race points)
• Prize money
• new starting location — the site of our first duathlon — the Riverport Community Centre at 79 Lower Lahave Road, Riverport, NS
• the bike courses will be the same as previous years for both distances, however the runs are different — quiet, flat and fast
• the new site is tight for space so we are capping the race — Classic distance (4/28/4) : 80 individual/5 Teams and the Do-a-DU distance (1/14/1) : 20 individuals

The 10th Annual Bridgetown Triathlon took place on Sunday July 31, 2011 under near perfect conditions — sunny, light breeze and warm (24C).  Its a popular race for the BTC and this year we had participants in all the distances including:

• Youth/Try-a-Tri : Jennifer Aggett (3rd Female Overall an 1st in her Age Group), Liam Patterson (1st Overall), Diana Saunders (2nd Female Overall, 1st in her Age Group) and Ken Snook (1st in his Age Group).
• Sprint : Llew Chase,  Caitlin Cormier,  Kevin Johnson (2nd in his Age Group), Jennifer MacDougall and Tom Rogers.
• Olympic : Janelle Knickle (1st in her Age Group) and Steve Saunders (1st in his Age Group)
• Long Course : Tim Brooks and Tammy Slauenwhite (2nd in her age group)

Brigewater Triathlon Club membership has more than doubled this year. largely due to our new ‘My First Triathlon’ program being held for 16 weeks at Fancy Lake.  Participants are gradually introduced to the parts of multi-sports including duathlon (run-bike-run), aqualthon (swim-run-swim-run) and concluding on the last night (August 17) with a triathlon (swim-bike-run)

Our members have been very busy at races this summer.  Tim Brooks finished second in his age group in the Sprint Distance at the Ingonish Triathlon in Cape Breton on July 3rd. Tom Rogers also participated in this race.

On July 2nd Liam Patterson finished third at the Bedford Kids of Steel Triathlon. Liam also traveled to New Brunswick on July 10th where he finished in first place at the CFB Gagetown Super Sprint Triathlon.

In Port Hood on July 17th Bev Richardson finished second in her age group in the Sprint Distance. Steve Saunders did the Olympic Distance race where he finished third in his age group. Tim Brooks also participated in the Olympic distance.

On July 24th four BTC members travelled to Guysborough. In the Sprint Distance Provincial Championships Janelle Knickle was second female overall and first in her age group. Tim Brooks finished first in his age group. Liam Patterson competed in the Youth Provincial Championships where he finished second overall securing his spot on the Nova Scotia Provincial Team for the third straight year. Steve Saunders finished first in his age group in the Olympic distance.

Inadvertently left out of our last article, at the Greenwood Triathlon Janelle Knickle was second female overall and finished second in her age group in the Sprint Distance. Janelle also traveled to New Brunswick for the Duncan Hadley Triathlon on June 26th where she finished third in her age group in the Olympic Distance.

Last night’s workout was a practice DUATHLON (run-bike-run) .   Six weeks into our program, it was an opportunity for newcomers to put the pieces together while vets could work on their training.

It was a beautiful night at Fancy Lake for the big turnout … is summer finally here ?!?

This concludes our bike/run bricks and we look forward to adding lake swims as part of the weekly program.

The workouts for the first 6 weeks will be bike/run ‘bricks’.  By mid June the water temperature is warm enough to start swimming.

Members receive a weekly email with details about the upcoming practice and related information.

This year, the Bridgewater Triathlon Club has a program that includes the old favourites (our 16 week summer program at Fancy Lake) plus a number of new things meant to challenge newcomers as well as experienced multi-sport athletes.

We’re very excited about a brand new program specifically for first timers.  We’ll have the details about this program over the next couple of weeks.
