[BRIDGEWATER, NS] – July 14, 2009 — Summertime in Nova Scotia — beach time, BBQs and race season for the Bridgewater Triathlon Club. Members are not required to race, but most do. It’s a good opportunity to see how your training is coming along and travel to some new spots to see old friends and make new ones.
There are over a dozen races to choose from across Nova Scotia. If you are willing to travel, there are many, many more outside the province.
Triathlon races often have several formats within one race. For new-comers, a popular first race is called a ‘Try-a-tri’. The idea is to introduce people to multi-sport races with swim, bike and run elements that are achievable with a modest amount of preparation. The most popular format is the ‘Sprint’ that include a 750M swim, 20k bike and a 5k run. The ‘Olympic’ distance is – as the name suggests — the format used in the Olympic Games with a 1500M swim, 40K bike and a 10K run. Many ‘Sprint’ distance racers graduate to the Olympic distance for the additional challenge.
The Bridgetown Triathlon on August 2 includes the popular formats and is a club favourite. Three of our club members are preparing for the IronMan distance. This grueling event includes a 3.8K swim, 180k bike and a 42k run. Preparation is key for IronMan and it includes many, many hours in the water, on the bike and pounding the pavement.
New this year — the club has two awards to encourage and recognize members that race. The Point Series Award goes to the top male and top female in their best three triathlons/duathlons. The Warrior Award goes to the person who completes the most races. As it turns out, running races are the most popular event with our members. The current leaders are listed on our website.
